The 20th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a Smooth Move class at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, March 21.

The class aimed to remove some of the stressors of moving by providing information to Team Shaw Airmen and families before their transition to a new duty location, retirement or separation.

“The class was developed to assist members and their families during a permanent change of station move,” said Dorcus Green, 20th FSS community readiness consultant. “It’s a one-stop shop for the individual, which includes a briefing from housing, finance, the transportation management office, the school liaison officer and Exceptional Family Member Program.”

During the class, Airmen received goody bags filled with information pamphlets and listened to representatives from around base speak about factors to consider and how their respective units can help.

Richard Pembleton, 20th FSS community readiness specialist, said the key to having a smooth move is preparation, which the class can assist with by providing an avenue for people to ask questions and learn about helping agencies.

“Plan ahead, set goals and watch your finances,” suggested Pembleton.

Smooth Move is part of the overall AFRC relocation program, which also assists individuals arriving to Shaw through programs like Right Start. Although the class is currently held quarterly, the AFRC is planning to increase the frequency during PCS seasons.

“I think the Air Force sees the relocation program as crucial,” said Green. “For the first-term Airman who’s moving with their family it can be very chaotic and so we want to make the process easier.”

The AFRC hosts many programs designed to help Airmen and their families through difficult transitions such as changing duty locations and deployments. For more information on Smooth Move, or to find out about other services offered through the AFRC, call 803-895-1252.
