"Shaw spent an average of $26,275 every day last year for energy?" asked Ed Saleem, resource efficiency manager.

That doesn't even include the fuel for flying missions or for the military vehicles on base.

According to Saleem, "While a lot of this energy is essential, a lot of it is wasted."

"When you move around base, do you see lights on that shouldn't be, working spaces overheated or too cool? Doors open on hangars, buildings, loading docks?

"That is all waste.

"Civil engineers are doing the things necessary to help reduce energy useage such as replacing the older lighting with energy-efficient lighting. For instance, the 2008 base Christmas tree had LED lighting, which we estimated to save about $300 in energy costs for the holiday season.

"Maybe we can't all be personally fighting the war over there, but we can fight the war over here by doing the things necessary to reduce the amount of energy we are using on base, and at home. It is up to us to be part of the energy solution," Saleem concluded.
