4/14/2010 - SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Shaw's largest temporary lodging facility is now available for booking after months of renovation.

Airmen from the base lodging office decided to improve upon the cramped transient housing conditions in the spirit of this year's theme of taking care of the Air Force Family.

The standard rooms have only one bedroom and are expected to house families of up to four or five people.

The planning for new, larger rooms started in October, explained Mike Bayerl, Shaw's lodging general manager. He said they proposed a self-help project to turn two standard one-bedroom units into a single three-bedroom unit. With a budget of around $6,000 and four people to do the labor, the project went underway.

Construction finished in early April, and the first renovated room has already housed a guest. Base leadership has since granted the lodging office approval to convert 14 more units.

"When you combine these efforts with the base renlignment and closure construction, Shaw will have some of the best temporary living facilities in the Air Force," remarked Mr. Bayerl.
