8/21/2012 - SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Children from Sumter's Crosswell neighborhood had the opportunity to visit Shaw for a tour of the base and to meet with Airmen, Aug 17.

The children and their chaperones were treated to a visit of the 55th Fighter Squadron where they were able to meet pilots, try on flight equipment and get an up-close look at an F-16 Fighting Falcon. Afterwards, the group went to the kennels where they saw a military working dog demonstration.

"It was awesome, just awesome," said Janet McCoy, chairperson of the Crosswell community improvement committee. "The kids are still talking about it. It was a blessing because now their minds are focused on what they want to do when they're older and how to be all that they can."

The visit lasted three hours and also included a driving tour of Shaw, a trip to the static aircraft display and lunch at Memorial Park.

"I would like to thank Shaw Air Force Base for their love, kindness and generosity and how they opened up their arms to us," McCoy said.

According to McCoy, the tour was an initiative of CCIC's ongoing mission to encourage children and parents in the community to educate, expand and enlighten their minds.

The committee itself is comprised of neighbors and citizens from the Crosswell community and has two primary focuses; improving the status of the Crosswell community and bringing the neighborhood together.
