The piano burning ceremony served as a farewell to the BDU era as all Airmen transition into the Airman Battle Uniform, Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., Oct 28, 2011. Piano burning is a fighter pilot tradition, which began during the Battle of Britain during World War II. The Royal Air Force pilots were to be gentlemen and proposed the solution to have anyone who wasn?t trained in piano to be given lessons. Retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Bill Skroch, (right) presents U.S. Air Force Col. Moore, 20th Fighter Wing commander, with the Flight 70 Palmetto Order of Daedalian at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. Sept. 20, 2011. The Flight 70 Palmetto Order of Daedalian was awarded to commemorate the 70th Anniversary of the activation of Shaw Field. The art work features Lieutenant Burton M. Hover, Jr., flying in a formation of Boeing P-12 biplanes in the 1930s. Hovey is in aircraft number seven.
