SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --   Members of the 20th Security Forces Squadron check numerous identification cards each day at Shaw Air Force Base, S.C., circa 1942, top, and Jan. 22, bottom.

Shaw Field was officially activated on Aug. 30, 1941 and was established as a basic flying school under the jurisdiction of the Southeast Training Center. The installation mission was to train cadets and student officers in basic flying courses. Shaw’s current mission is to prepare, employ and sustain combat ready suppression of enemy air defenses, attack F-16CM Fighting Falcon airpower, and develop combat ready Airmen to win our nation’s wars.
