Twelve Girl Scouts could hardly contain themselves Tuesday at the Palmetto Chapel where they packaged more than 100 boxes of cookies for Airmen overseas.

The girls, racing to see who could fill the boxes the quickest, belong to Girl Scouts Troop 57 at Shaw and range in age from six to nine years old.

The troop paired up with the Blue Star Mothers, a non-profit service organization, to ship the cookies to various places such as Iraq and South Korea.

"Girl Scouts teach young girls the importance of service to others," said Tricia Greenwell, Troop 57 troop leader. "Since girl scouting involves girls from grades kindergarten through adult, there are opportunities for girls to learn values and skills from older girls and caring adults who, as volunteer leaders and co-leaders, are also registered Girl Scouts."

The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character while striving to teach them leadership and professionalism, according to the local Girl Scouts Web site.

"Our troop is hoping to provide a little piece of home to our troops deployed overseas," said Jakki Wiseman, Troop 57 co-leader.

The girls also made greeting cards for the servicemembers, which are being sent along with the cookies. When asked why, Girl Scout Alyssa Greenwell said they did it "just to be nice and thank them for everything they do." Girl Scout Diana Bowden said she made the card "to make the soldiers feel better."

Mrs. Wiseman said the girls couldn’t have done this service for the deployed troops without the generous support of the Sumter and Shaw community.
