On a cold February morning in 1943, 150 miles from the coast of Greenland, a German submarine U2 shot a barrage of torpedoes, striking and sinking the U.S. Army Transport Dorchester and sending 902 service members, merchant seamen and civilian workers into the frigid water.

Aboard the transport were four chaplains: 1st Lts. George Fox, Alexander Goode, John Washington and Clark Poling. The chaplains helped calm the frightened passengers, escorted many to the safety of life rafts and sacrificed themselves by giving away their life jackets and going down with the ship.

Team Shaw honored the chaplains’ selflessness by coming together for the Four Chaplains 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament.

“It was a good opportunity to get together as one family,” said Chaplain (Capt.) Eddie Rubero, 20th Fighter Wing chaplain. “It was a great opportunity to get to know each other and have a moment of bonding.”

The tournament consisted of 19 teams made up of 59 players. After several hours of play, the final two teams emerged. After a close fought battle a champion was found.

“It always feels good to win,” said Staff Sgt. Terrance Pinckney, 20th Logistics Readiness Squadron equipment accountability element supervisor. “It’s even better to have everyone come together and play.”
