One of Shaw's Airmen "signed the dotted line" to become an avionics specialist, but his time at Shaw has taken him down a different path.

Senior Airman Michael McGuire, 77th Aircraft Maintenance Unit and Shaw AFB Honor Guard lead trainer, found out he was selected to become a member of the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard May 31.

He was selected by his special duty package which included his enlisted performance reports, fitness scores, measurements and photographs, he said.
Airman McGuire will begin his three-year commitment this July at Bolling Air Force Base, D.C.

"I'm excited because this is one of the most prestigious jobs in the Air Force," Airman McGuire said.

"The Air Force Honor Guard does pretty much everything we do here, but on a larger scale," he said.

The honor guard performs during several highly-visible events each day, including funerals at the Arlington National Cemetery, visits from foreign dignitaries, etc., Airman McGuire said.

He said he is hoping to get a lot of experience in various positions and duties in the Air Force Honor Guard.

"I think he's going to do an outstanding job," said Tech. Sgt. Ernest Flippin, Shaw AFB Honor Guard NCOIC. "I can say with confidence, our loss is their gain."

"I don't really know what to expect, but I'm ready to embrace it," Airman McGuire said.
