Safety remains focal point Published Sept. 28, 2006 By Tarsha Storey 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- At the end of the year, some people make resolutions of things they would like to do in the coming year, while others look back on the year and reflect what they have accomplished. In a recent memorandum, Gen. Ronald Keys, Air Combat Command commander, said it is important for all members of ACC to take a moment and review the lessons learned in the past year and focus on safety. He also said ACC needs to focus on smart operations because the Air Force cannot afford to cut corners. As part of command's focus on safety, Shaw observed a Safety Day Tuesday, said Lt. Col. Chris Ashby, 20th Fighter Wing Safety chief. "Safety Day gives us the opportunity to look at our mishap prevention program for both on the job and off the job activities. We can evaluate how we can improve the safety for the entire wing while maximizing the Air Force's mission and success. Our goal for 2007 is zero mishaps," said Col. Bill Hyatt, 20th Fighter Wing commander. The safety focus is not just limited to on the job risks. Problems such as drinking and driving and driving while fatigued typically happen after a member leaves work. Commanders across the wing had the opportunity to use the day to increase awareness in their squadrons of the possible dangers of the season. Squadrons were given the opportunity to step away from the tasks of a normal work week to cover issues facing their members. Topics covered ranged from drinking and driving to seatbelt use and bicycle safety, Col. Ashby said. Because squadrons face different challenges and safety issues, each commander was able to tailor their safety program to the risks of their specific squadron, Col. Ashby said. "As the new fiscal year begins, our focus needs to be on how to live and work safely while becoming a leaner, more adaptable and lethal Air Force," Col. Hyatt said.
