Keystone Club Published Aug. 31, 2006 By Tarsha Storey 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Service, leadership and responsibility are three of the focuses of Shaw's teen organization, the Keystone Club. The club meets every Wednesday at 6 p.m. and is open to all teens ages 14 to 18, said Davin Watson, 20th Services Squadron Teen Center coordinator. The Keystone Club has been a part of the national Boys and Girls Club since the early 1960s. Service to club and community, education and career, free enterprise, social recreation, unity and leadership, and development are the club's six core program areas, according to Boys and Girls Club officials. Each week, Shaw teens gather, with the guidance of adult advisors, to discuss and plan upcoming events and community service projects, said Mr. Watson. Community service projects give teens a voice and allow them a chance to make a difference in their community while building their character, said Mr. Watson. The club also elects leadership such as a president, vice president and secretary. This helps the teens understand the importance and responsibilities of holding an office, said Mr. Watson. A few of the most recent events the Keystone Club has undertaken include collecting clothes for the women's shelter, helping with Special Olympics, working with the elderly and helping Habitat for Humanity, said Mr. Watson. Even though the main focus of the club is serving family and community, said Mr. Watson, the teens also have social events such as pizza parties. "The club gives young people a chance to act on their humanitarian ideals as they build self respect and strong attachments to family and community," said Mr. Watson.
