Award honors top Airmen Published Jan. 30, 2006 By Tarsha Storey 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Appearance, attitude and actions are three things the recipients of the JJ Pollack Sharp Troop Award have in common. The award is presented to Shaw members E-5 and below after careful consideration by the award’s committee, said Chief Master Sgt. Phillip Robinson, JJ Pollack Sharp Troop Award committee member. Award nominees must have a positive professional attitude, razor sharp appearance and outstanding duty performance for their nomination month. The award criteria is not limited to what Airmen accomplish during their duty hours -- volunteer work is also considered.“It’s not how many things they do, it’s what they’re doing and accomplishing. It’s a tough selection process, but we are committed to recognizing our deserving junior enlisted,” said Chief Robinson. Each month, chief master sergeants across Shaw submit the names of their outstanding troops. Their award packages are reviewed and two winners are selected. They have a luncheon twice a year to honor the recipients, said Chief Robinson. The history of the award started in 1993, when Chief Master Sgt. JJ Pollack became a member of Shaw. He established the Sharp Award for outstanding troops. Upon his death one year later, the award was renamed the JJ Pollack Memorial Sharp Troop Award in his honor, said Chief Robinson.“The (award) allows the Shaw Community Chiefs another opportunity to recognize our junior enlisted personnel who consistently demonstrate outstanding duty performance, present an exceptional personal appearance and professional and congenial attitude,” said Chief Master Sgt. David Gouin, JJ Pollack Memorial Sharp Troop Award committee member.
