Master Sgt. Jason Harlan, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron munitions operations NCO in charge, with support from the Shaw Philosophical Society hosted a College-Level Examination Program Prep-A-Thon at the McElveen Information and Learning Center, March 1.

The Prep-A-Thon is a pre-test study system designed to help Team Shaw members increase their readiness for CLEP tests as well as Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support Subject Standardized Tests, the SAT or ACT.

“What we want to do is have them prepared before they step into the testing room,” said Harlan, who is also the creator of the program. “Leadership matters, and we believe in a philosophy of developing Airmen.”

Harlan said so far the program has helped 38 people, potentially saving approximately $11,000 in CLEP retake fees and saving the Air Force around $28,500 in tuition assistance.

CLEP provides college credits through tests corresponding to the college equivalency of one-semester to two-year courses. The test is free the first time.

The study system is designed to imitate the test layout, mimicking the time of day and the test itself, as well as the classroom environment and proctor.

The proctor briefs participants, giving them information on CLEP and DANTES as well as suggesting study techniques and tips. The practice tests are administered electronically and there is no limit on how many times an individual can take the test.

“I hope this helps people become better test takers and become comfortable enough to actually take a CLEP,” said Tech. Sgt. Isaiah English, 20th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron flightline NCO in charge and Prep-A-Thon proctor. “Some people don’t take CLEP tests because they don’t know what to do or how it will help them. If you already know the information, all you have to do is take a CLEP and you get the college credit.”

This program is one of many opportunities offered on base that service members and their families can use to invest in their education and themselves.

“A smart force is a lethal force,” said Harlan, explaining why education is important to the overall mission.

The CLEP Prep-A-Thon is available every Monday and Wednesday at 9 a.m. in the library. For swing-shift and mid-shift workers, or units who would like to prepare together, call 803-895-0677 to schedule a session for a different time.
