The 20th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted a series of workshops and classes in the spirit of Military Saves Week here, Feb. 27 to March 4.

Military Saves Week is a DOD-wide program intended to assist military members around the country practice good saving habits.

According to the Military Saves website, “Military Saves Week is an annual opportunity for installations and organizations to promote good saving behaviors and is a chance for service members and their families to assess their own saving status.”

Throughout the week, Team Shaw members had the opportunity to participate in seminars that focused on grocery, business and retirement savings, that were intended to help those who may be struggling financially, become more financially sound.

Their lives can be affected by divorce or losing their security clearance, said Yolanda Williams, 20th FSS A&FRC community readiness consultant. Those affected by these factors may experience poor dieting, financial stress and lose focus on the mission.

These resources provide Team Shaw with the opportunity to strengthen their knowledge on saving methods.

“I’ve seen the effect of poor saving habits on Airmen over the years,” said Linda Walker, Military Family Life personal financial counselor. “But to those Airmen who may not be able to come out and take advantage of these services, we will happily assist.”

Although some Airmen may not be able to reach these resources due to work or personal events, the A&FRC provided face-to-face access to courses such as; “Couponing 101,” “Are You Retirement Ready?,” “Credit Score” courses and many more.

As the Military Saves Week wraps up here, service members have been taking advantage of courses to better themselves and help boost their knowledge on the dangers of lacking financial security.

“There are many who struggle with their finances,” said Airman 1st Class Joshua Olmeda, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron munition systems technician. “But taking these courses were the first steps in kick-starting the life of me and family.”
