The Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce hosted the ninth annual Military Appreciation Picnic here, Sept. 29.

“The Military Appreciation Picnic means a lot and is a little overwhelming because the people I don’t normally interact with on a daily basis are out here showing their support and gratitude for the people in the military,” said Senior Airman Andrew Verde, 28th Operational Weather Squadron weather forecaster. “They are out here taking time out of their day to cater to us, welcome us into their community and show the different services they can offer us.”

Many active duty military members and civilians at Shaw AFB took time to enjoy food from local vendors. Local businesses and non-profit organizations donated food and drinks for the Team Shaw members in attendance.

“It’s good for the younger Airmen also, in the way that they make us feel welcome and that we’re not alone in our journey in the military,” Verde said. “It’s a good chance to meet other people in the military and the community. I’m truly appreciative of them being here for us.”

The event was open to active duty military personnel and Department of Defense civilian employees working at Shaw.

The Chamber of Commerce also invited the Gentleman Trio (Gentri) to perform the National Anthem and their patriotic medley for Team Shaw members.

“No matter what their job is, we are grateful for the service they render,” said Brad Robins, Gentleman Trio singer. “It is a huge honor for us to have the opportunity to sing to them about the great country, honoring the great country in this incredible setting. We’re excited to be here.”

Approximately 1,200 people attended the picnic with 20th Fighter Wing leadership and volunteers serving the food. Donors and organizers brought music, informational displays and food.

They also gave away beverages and free items as a way to say "thank you" to Shaw's military members and employees for their contributions to the nation and the community.
