SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – The sound of tires rolling to a stop and, the question “Need a ride to your vehicle?” will be heard more and more as the 20th Medical Group shuttle program kicked into gear.

The 20th MDG at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, began a program to shuttle clinic visitors and patients to and from the front door to the parking lot by using a repurposed golf cart.

“The golf cart that we implemented is for customer service purposes, but it’s also for safety,” said 2nd Lt. Kimberly Dotson 20th MDG, medical logistics flight commander. “We want to make sure our patients who have injuries or are feeling ill don’t have to walk so far from their vehicle to the front entrance.”

20th MDG Airmen currently operate the cart, but the medical logistics team is scheduled to begin accepting volunteers from other flights and different organizations across Shaw.

“We were already utilizing the handicap accessible ramp and can use the cart to aid that process in getting our patients to and from the building and to their appointments,” said George Watson, 20th MDG facility manager.

While the cart is primarily used for patients entering the clinic, any Team Shaw member that wants to get out of the rain or cold can hop on the cart when its available and utilize the service to the entrance.

“Logistics, thankfully, already had the golf cart. We decided to repurpose it and rebuild it to use for patient transportation,” said Dotson. “We were trying to think of any way to make a seamless transition because that’s what we are here for, we are here for the patients.”

Patients are the number one priority at the 20th MDG, said Dotson. This service is one more way of showing how the med group takes care of its patients.
