SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. – The 20th Medical Group is rearing up to deal a blow to the long lines at the Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, Exchange pharmacy with the implementation of a script center.

The script center is an automated kiosk that Team Shaw members can receive their prescriptions after pharmacy hours.

“If you have not been by the BX pharmacy, we have had line congestion,” said Maj. Christopher Dykes, 20th MDG diagnostics and therapeutics flight commander. “A lot of retirees, active duty members and family members end up getting stuck in line to pick up medications from the counter to the doors of the BX. We needed to come up with a way to alleviate that congestion.”

The way to alleviate the congestion is a supplemental system to acquire prescribed medication. The script center is a machine into which Team Shaw members can enter information and receive prescription medication without the need of a physical technician.
“A patient can opt for their prescription to be filled in the script center,” said Dykes. “As long as the doors of the BX are open, a patient can access this machine and pick up their medications.”

This targets Team Shaw members constrained by their work schedule who struggle to make it to the BX during operating hours.

“This is also going to be beneficial to our retirees because it will result in lower wait times, extend the hours on picking up medication and the machine is secured with patient information or with a biometric finger scan,” said Senior Airman Branden Renee, 20th MDG pharmacy technician.

The script center is scheduled to be activated for general use on April 25.

“I just want to let patients know that their concerns were heard,” said Dykes. “We want to do anything in our power to make their experience a positive one and better every time.”
