The 20th Force Support Squadron Airman and Family Readiness Center hosted an annual volunteer appreciation breakfast at the Carolina Skies Club and Conference Center, April 19.

“Many individuals may ask, ‘Why is volunteering so important?’ When you look at the reasons of the importance, it’s not only all about the impact that can be made on other individuals’ lives, but also the role that can be played with helping individuals become more tolerant and giving back to a more global community,” said Dr. Norris Williams, Sumter School District leadership and school excellence assistant superintendent. “Each of us should be willing to volunteer and give our time without really expecting anything in return, but the truth is volunteering will bring a world of reward that may happen and never be expected.”

The breakfast recognized Team Shaw members’ contributions to the community in the past 12 months.

“Volunteering allows us to give an opportunity to assist others who may be less fortunate,” Williams said. “Unfortunately, not everyone was born into a life of opportunity. Sometimes, depending upon the country or city or the state you grew up in, it may have a dictation on the type of life that you’re provided initially. … When you work to improve the lives of others, your life improves.”

Because these individuals donate their own time, organizations that rely solely on volunteers, such as Shaw’s Airman’s Attic, can continue helping families and offering services that bring people together.

“Team Shaw would not be the community it is without (volunteers),” said Jane Allen, 20th Mission Support Group installation support deputy director. “Know that you make a difference each and every day, and your actions have the potential to change the world.”
