SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --
The 20th Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation staff hosted an open house at their main building on base, May 9.
The event aimed to give Team Shaw members information about the facility and a chance to learn about what it offers to the community.
“It’s an opportunity for the base to come out and see what we do,” said Tim Godwin, 20th FSS outdoor recreation director. “We’re finding out a lot of people on base have never been here before. We want people to know what we’re about. We take a lot of pride in what we do and we’re here to serve military members.”
The staff provide supply and equipment rentals for a variety of sports and events, host morale trips such as skydiving and teach classes such as camping 101, swimming and boating.
They also maintain the Falcon’s Nest FamCamp, Woodland Pool, Wateree Recreation Area, base picnic grounds and Skeet and Trap Range.
“The summer’s coming up so I wanted to find something fun to do with my kids,” said Master Sgt. Michael Sanders, 20th Communications Squadron radio frequency transmissions section chief. “I’m relatively new here so this is a great way to greet people, meet people and network. It’s been great, last weekend I went out to Wateree. … When I got down there the facilities and beach were nice and I could tell it was a fun place right off the bat.”
Saunders said while at the lake he and his daughter were able to catch a lot of fish and the trip further influenced his decision to go to the open house.
During the expo, guests entered a raffle to win prizes, ate a free lunch and spoke with representatives from different recreational areas as well as other agencies such as the Shaw 5/6 and the Department of Natural Resources.
“With you guys getting deployed and things like that, spending time outdoors is a good stress reliever,” said Godwin. “It’s a good chance to spend time with your family, get away from computers and television, and enjoy what nature has to offer — even if you just float around on the lake in a kayak or canoe, it’s so relaxing — everybody needs to get away from the workplace and destress.”
The Outdoor Recreation facility is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for service members and their families as well as Defense Department civilians and retirees. For more information, call 803-895-0450 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
