Col. Derek O’Malley, 20th Fighter Wing commander, hosted his first commander’s call at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina, July 13.

During the commander’s call, O’Malley expressed his intentions, gave advice and set the tone for a positive culture in the coming years.

O’Malley laid out three basic command themes: unify, simplify and win.
He encouraged everyone to recognize that, as Airmen, “We need each other. … We are all on the same team.”

O’Malley challenged each Airman to reflect on their personal duty day to ensure that each day, excellence is applied to all that matters. He reminded Airmen that each of them plays an important role in accomplishing the mission.

“We need to accomplish the mission in a way that preserves the people, resources and the energy to fight and win again tomorrow,” said O’Malley.

O’Malley’s words resonated with Airmen from all units across Shaw AFB.
“It was very exciting to see what Col. O’Malley is bringing to Shaw,” said Staff Sgt. Jake Day, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron explosive ordinance disposal technician. “I loved the high energy and passion he brought to the commander’s call this morning. I left feeling very inspired and motivated to not only better myself, but to do everything I can do to make my flight the best it can be. I’m thrilled to see what the next two years have to offer.”

O’Malley concluded by encouraging Airmen to know one another and take care of one another.

He said, “Be excellent at your primary job, take care of yourself, your coworkers, your friends and your family.”
