Barbers provide their services to keep Team Shaw Airmen looking sharp and within Air Force regulations while in uniform as well as their families at Shaw Air Force Base, South Carolina.

Donald Eady, 20th Force Support Squadron barber, said, “I always put my best foot forward in giving haircuts to not only military members, but their families as well. I take pride in the service I provide because hair is part of the uniform.”

Air Force Instruction 36-2903, Dress and Personal Appearance of Air Force Personnel, states that male hair must have a tapered appearance on both sides and the back of the head, both with and without head gear. A block-cut is also permitted with a tapered appearance, but hair must not exceed one and 1 ¼ inches in bulk, regardless of length and one fourth inch at natural termination point. Hair will not touch the ears or protrude under the front band of headgear, but cleanly shaven heads, military high-and-tight or flat-tops cuts are authorized.

Some of the barbers not only see their job as helping Airmen, but also see the Team Shaw community as their second home.

“I basically grew up on this base,” said Ryan Boykin, 20th FSS barber. “Shaw has always been very good to me and my family and I find it very interesting meeting all different walks of life through the Air Force and Army.”

The barber shop next to the Airman’s Attic caters to all ages, active duty, retired and family members.
