Team Shaw members recently came together to beautify one of Sumter, South Carolina’s, many highways.

According to palmettopride.org, Adopt-A-Highway came to help S.C. Department of Transportation with this important volunteer program. More than 545,000 volunteers removed 62 million pounds of litter from roads and natural areas.

Many of these highways are kept clean by specific squadrons or organizations around base which gives Team Shaw the opportunity to give back to the local community.

Staff Sgt. Patrick Formiller, 20th Security Forces Squadron flight chief, said it is important to get people out to the highway clean-ups because it is a great opportunity to connect with the community.

It is a great way to get military members, spouses and locals together which is why the hope is to conduct one at least once a month, said Tech. Sgt. Christopher Ingle, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron non-commissioned officer in charge of emergency communication center.
