SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Strengthening relationships with local communities is one of the many factors of mission success for many Air Force installations.

To show support for the community, the 20th Force Support Squadron Fitness Center hosted a 5K flightline run, April 6.

The run opened the base to community members giving them the opportunity to see the 20th Fighter Wing mission through static displays.

Participants received a running bib, commemorative water bottle and other flightline 5K knick-knacks.

“I want to give a big thanks to the 20th FW team for putting this whole thing together,” said Col. Derek O’Malley, 20th FW commander. “It took all hand to get this whole day put together.”

Military members received the opportunity to build camaraderie with their civilian counterparts in a healthy, lively way.

“It great that everyone gets to see what we do here at Shaw,” said Capt. Anthony Lemons, Air Forces Central Command logistics readiness officer. “There is a real sense of camaraderie and there is a bunch of things for families to do as well.”

With these events, the base is able to showcase the importance of the installation while building strong bonds with the community outside the gate.
