20th MDG train for CBRN attack

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --  The 20th Medical Group, first responders and emergency management Airmen participated in a chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear attack training scenario, May 2.

The scenario was a vehicle explosion that harmed approximately 10 individuals and had the possibility of releasing dangerous chemicals in its radius.

“Today we tested our Airmen’s field response skills in the case of a car explosion,” said Master Sgt. Corina Schrank, 20th MDG education and training flight chief. “Along with their response skills, we focused heavily on their decontamination procedures.”

More than 120 individuals played a role in accessing the scene, treating wounded individuals and escorting victims to decontamination stations for additional treatment.

“The first time our medics exercise these skills shouldn’t be real world,” said Schrank. “Our Airmen need to take trainings serious and build on muscle memory to ensure no lives are lost.”

The training focused on the tasks necessary to resuscitate or evacuate casualties in a CBRN scenario stateside or overseas, as well as decontaminate injured personnel.

By remaining proficient through numerous training scenarios, medical Airmen are ready to apply those services, should they need to, anytime, anywhere.
