SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --

We sat down with Senior Airman Abigail Gorecki, 55th Fighter Squadron aviation resource manager, to get to know her and how she helps keep our jets flying safely. Gorecki is best known for her funny sarcasm in the shop and her good taste in music. At home, Gorecki enjoys playing soccer, hiking, going to the beach and watching television.

Where are you from?

Big Lake, Minnesota.

Why did you decide to join the Air Force?

This is the only thing I’ve wanted to do since I was a little kid, so I’m making my dreams happen.

How long have you been at Shaw?

Two and a half years.

What is your favorite part of South Carolina?

Being so close to everything. In Minnesota I don’t have beaches so being so close to that is awesome.

How would you describe a normal day?
Come in, look at the checklist of things I have to do and just start grinding it out.

What is your favorite sport? Team?

My favorite sport would be soccer and my favorite team would be Chelsea.

How would you describe your leadership style?

By example. I’ve learned a lot from my supervisor on how to lead and I’ve taken that and made it my own so I can be the most effective leader.

What is one Air Force resource you found that is incredibly beneficial?

The educational benefits.

What’s your outlook mailbox look like?

Too full. Probably almost all the way full.

What is one thing you wish people knew about your job?

We’re not maintenance; we do a lot more than just talking on the radio. We keep our pilots qualified and ready to fly.

What is your least favorite task and how do you make sure you get it done?

Flying documents; it’s very boring, but you just have to tell yourself it needs to get done.

What is your favorite part of the job?

The ability to travel. We get to meet different kinds of pilots and other Airmen. This job can vary a lot depending on the type of aircraft you work with.

What is your favorite part of the holiday season?

Getting to go home and see my family.
