WOW: Airman 1st Class Fleming

We sat down with Airman 1st Class Grant Fleming, 20th Maintenance Operations Weapons Standardization Section, to get to know him. Outside work Fleming is best known for training and competing in combat sports, which include wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu and muay thai. He is currently working toward reaching his goal of cross-training into a special warfare career field.

 

Where are you from?

I am from Bel Air, Maryland.

 

Why did you decide to join the Air Force?

I decided to join the Air Force to have the ability to travel and continue my education.

 

How long have you been at Shaw?

I’ve been in at Shaw for two years and counting.

 

What is your favorite part of South Carolina?

My favorite city in South Carolina is Charleston.

 

How would you describe a normal day?

Every day is spent evaluating or teaching load crews how to load ordnance safely and reliably.

 

What is your favorite sport? Team?

My favorite sports are wrestling and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

 

How would you describe your leadership style?

I feel my leadership style is assertive but I also try to be understanding.

 

What is one Air Force resource you found that is incredibly beneficial and why?

The GI Bill is my favorite Air Force resource.

 

What’s your outlook mailbox look like?

What is one thing you wish people knew about your job?

I wish people understood how much time and effort is spent teaching brand new crews.

 

What is your least favorite task and how do you make sure you get it done?

My least favorite task is filling out certification and decertification paperwork.

 

What is your favorite part of the job?

My favorite part of the job is seeing a crew that I trained complete their job flawlessly.
