A Shaw chaplain reservist established a Shaw community choir here and is welcoming new members.

Chaplain (Capt.) Michelle Law-Gordon is searching for anyone who is a military ID card holder, ranging from vocalists to instrumentalists, who are interested in participating in a choir program dedicated to Christian and contemporary music.

"I have seen kids who have had a rough time staying out of trouble and finding something that motivates them to move forward in a positive direction," said Law-Gordon. "With these kids, Christian music has gave them a new aspect on life and helped them make a turn around. I feel the same idea could be used for military members and their family members."

Although Law-Gordon just started the group in April they have participated in Shaw's Best even with having a total of only six members.

Shaw's Best is an event held on base that allows gospel and Christian based music groups to perform and showcase their talents while also entertaining a crowd of people who listen to or are interested in the music genre.

"We realize there are people in the Shaw community who have gifts," said Law-Gordon. We want to try to encourage them to be a part of a group where they can experience a better feeling, despite being away from home."

Currently, the choir is preparing for Community Best and a choir showcase such as maybe doing a gospel performance with details still being in the making.

"I joined the Team Shaw Choir because I truly enjoy singing and praising.," said Alicia Cohen, 20th Force Support Squadron NCOIC of retention. "To be qualified, all we are looking for is positive attitudes, team players, and a willing heart to sing or play an instrument."

The choir practices every Tuesday evening at 5:30 p.m., and normally lastsĀ  about an hour at the Friendship Chapel.

If you are interested in joining the choir, contact the chapel at 803-895-1106, or just stop by any time during practice.
