Operation military shower is a go

SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. --  Mothers, fathers, newborns, and siblings gathered at Palmetto Chapel here, June 28, to participate in Operation Military Shower.

"The baby shower is intended to help support mothers whose spouses are deployed," said Melissa Revel, the volunteer coordinator and founder of Operation Military Shower. "I believe the community of these women needs to come together and really be each other's support network."

In addition to Team Shaw families; U.S. Army Maj. Kevin Mateer, a Chaplain with Third Army/U.S. Army Central, and Ione J. Dwyer, city councilwoman with the city of Sumter, S.C., also attended the first-time event.

"There's no greater thing than having a child, it's a blessed event," said Dwyer. "We appreciate everything she (Revel) has done, as well as the spouses that serve our country."

Donations included everything from a baby crib mattress set to a teddy bear that records the baby's heartbeat.

Revel plans to continue the showers quarterly with the continued support of companies from all over the country, and globe that donated gifts and necessities for expectant mothers.
