At 11 a.m. on April 19, Shaw will be hosting a Pinko de Mayo breast cancer awareness luncheon at the Carolina Skies Club and Conference Center.

The event is targeted for uniformed personnel and retirees who are survivors of breast cancer. Although there is a desired audience, everyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are on sale for $16 and can be bought from Julie Smith, 20th Force Support Squadron assistant manager of the Carolina Skies Club, or at the club register.

"The reason for me wanting to do this event is because I have a couple of very good friends who have gone through such an incredible journey and have inspired me to reach out to the military community," said Smith. "I want to spread the word on how we can take care of ourselves, and that you don't have to be alone."

Janie Smith, managerĀ of the American Cancer Society out of Columbia, will be one of the speakers for the event.

"I'm glad that we are raising awareness because it's a little known fact that men can also get breast cancer," said Elizabeth Washington, 20th Force Support Squadron marketing clerk. "It's so important that people know the facts and statistics, and that they know that their military family is also here with them through the challenges that are faced."

This is the first time that Shaw has hosted a Pinko de Mayo and Smith hopes that there will be more to come.
