The 20th Mission Support Group welcomed new honorary commanders here Feb. 28.

Col. Scott Arcuri, 20th MSG commander, hosted a dinner at the Carolina Lakes Golf Course in order for the current commanders to get to know the new and still presiding honorary commanders for the group.

"Shaw is blessed to have tremendous support from our Sumter community partners, the best I've seen in my 23-year career," Arcuri said. "The honorary commander program is vital to that relationship and is mutually beneficial to both sides. First, we are able to introduce these community leaders to our Airmen and their families so they can better understand and appreciate our mission and the challenges our military families face. In turn, we count on our honorary commanders to be active in their squadrons to get a real sense of what goes on here on base and to be our liaisons to the community to help put a 'face' on the Team Shaw and MSG mission."

Each commander gave a mission brief for their squadron and presented their honorary commander with two mugs etched with their squadron's patch.

The purpose of the Air Force honorary commander program is to increase public awareness and understanding fo the armed forces and its mission, poliicies and programs of the AF, and to build relationships with members of the local community and encourage them to share the AF and Shaw AFB story.
