Shaw's economic impact up $54 million

As one of the largest employers in South Carolina, Shaw Air Force Base's contribution to the Midlands' economy during Fiscal Year 2011 increased $54 million, and $386 million more than FY09.

Shaw AFB's total economic impact Oct. 1, 2010 to Sept. 30, 2011 was $861 million and 11,000 jobs.
Other increases include:

. Team Shaw's military population now is around 8,200, up 2,000 from 2009.
. Family members in the area number 10,555, up 2,300 from 2009.
. Estimated jobs generated around Shaw, 2,942, up from 2,290.
. Estimated local wages from created jobs, $85 million, up from $72 million.

The arrival in 2011 of more than 900 Soldiers to staff the newly-built headquarters of Third Army/U.S. Army Central and their family members boosted the number of jobs on base. New construction and renovations at Shaw increased contracting, construction payments, utility and supply purchases.

"During this time of economic uncertainty it is our great pleasure to announce Shaw AFB is still a growing and a vital asset to the military, Sumter and South Carolina," said Capt. Ann Blodzinski, 20th Fighter Wing public affairs officer.

Shaw's host unit, the 20th Fighter Wing, is the largest F-16 Fighting Falcon combat wing in the Air Force. Other Team Shaw major tenant units include 9th Air Force, U.S. Air Forces Central and Third Army/U.S. Army Central.
