Shaw women's basketball come out strong for opening game Published Oct. 30, 2012 By Retired Master Sgt. Junko Allen Shaw AFB Women's Basketball SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- The Shaw AFB women's varsity basketball team had their opening game Oct. 24 against Morris College of Sumter. After just a week's worth of solid practice, the women of Shaw came together and showed the great talent that they possess. Prior to the game, retired Air Force Master Sgt. Coach Junko Allen told her team that if they went out and played smart and were disciplined they would go home with a win. That's exactly what they did. Team Shaw came out with some taunting defense, putting pressure on Morris College and forcing them to make turnovers which Shaw capitalized on. Pressure defense from guards Frances Fields, FeFe Moses, Erika Mims and Jasmine Alston put the Shaw women up by 10 by the half. Morris College hit a few 3-pointers which put them back into the game and ahead by six. Coach Allen then made some adjustments, allowing Shaw to chip away at the lead and ultimately win the game 53-49. Frances Fields contributed 23 points, Jasmine Alston 11 points and Erika Mims 13 rebounds. 11 of those rebounds were defensive "which kicked our fast breaks into action," according to Allen. Watch for future games held at the Shaw Fitness Center and local facilities.
