PRIVATELY OWNED WEAPONS

20th Security Forces wants to remind all military personnel residing on Shaw of the mandatory procedures for registering personally owned weapons.

Registering firearms enables enhanced situational awareness for chain of command members and allows them the ability to encourage safe and responsible behavior. This in turn, creates a safer environment for all personnel living on, working at, or visiting Shaw.

Personnel residing in dormitories, bachelor living quarters, temporary living facilities (TLFs) or billeting/lodging facilities must register their weapons and store all firearms and ammunition within the Security Forces armory. Personnel residing in Forest City housing may possess weapons at their residence, but are also required to register firearms at the Security Forces armory. Commanders at all levels will ensure personnel under their command comply with these requirements. Personnel failing to accomplish this task are subject to Article 92, Failure to Obey an Order or Regulation. Owners must immediately report the loss or theft of any firearm to the Base Defense Operations Center (BDOC) at 895-3669.

Firearm Registration can be accomplished by completing AF Form 1314 (Firearms Registration), DD Form 2760 (Qualification to Possess Firearms or Ammunition), and the Shaw AFB Firearms Purchase Letter (if a purchasing a firearm from AAFES). You can obtain these forms from the Security Forces Armory.

DORM RESIDENTS, VISITOR QUARTERS, TEMPORARY LODGING FACILITY, AND DISTINGUISHED VISITORS:

Personnel residing in dormitories, visitors' quarters, temporary lodging facility and distinguished visitors quarters are specifically prohibited from possessing weapons, and they must register and store their privately-owned weapons in the 20th SFS armory immediately upon arriving on the installation. Bring the firearm(s) directly to the armory, building 825, and the on-duty arms attendant will issue the individual an AF Form 1297, Temporary Issue Receipt, for the firearm(s). An AF Form 1314 must be completed and signed by the unit commander within 72 hours. After 72 hours, the firearm(s) must be designated as a permanent storage firearm or taken off the installation.

FOREST CITY RESIDENTIAL HOUSING RESIDENTS:

Personnel residing in on-base family housing (PCS-in, moving on-base, or moving from one housing unit to another) must register their firearms within 72 hours of signing for their residency keys.

On-base family housing residents may only maintain firearms they own and have registered with the 20th SFS armory.

Unit commanders may approve exceptions to these storage requirements for extenuating circumstances; for instance, weapons owned by dormitory residents, can be stored in on-base family housing if the individual storing the weapons provides written understanding of responsibility to the squadron commander and the individual's commander notifies 20 SFS/S-4A, Armory Section, of this event in writing.

Privately-owned ammunition, not to exceed 300 rounds, will be accounted for on an AF Form 1297, and requires a Firearms Policy letter (DD Form 2760, Qualification to Possess Firearms/Ammunition) signed by the individual's unit commander.

Sponsors residing in base housing are responsible for registering all firearms and ammunition present at their residence regardless of ownership by dependents or guests. Additionally, all personnel with weapons registered at the Security Forces Armory are responsible to update the 20th Security Forces Squadron whenever they change residences, add weapons to their collection, and on an annual basis.
