October is energy action month Published Oct. 15, 2012 By Kyle Davies 20th Civil Engineer Squadron SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Visit the Exchange for Energy Action Event Day on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event will include educational displays on Shaw's progress in reducing energy consumption, sneak peak vendor demonstrations of the latest in energy efficient technology, Shaw Youth Center's Energy Conservation Coloring Contest and enter to win a free lunch from Burger King. The Air Force's campaign theme this year is "I am Air Force Energy," inspiring a commitment from individuals to take action in reducing energy consumption. Remember, The Power of One, when combined with all, is astronomical! Abandon inefficient habits: Close that door, shut off the water, turn out those lights! Inspect your HVAC duct system for gaps, holes, disconnections, and insulation. Duct leakage is responsible for 15-30% in energy costs for HVAC systems. Reduce your thermostats in the heating season. Every degree above 70 increases heating costs 7-10% Follow the ACC temperature set point policy: Offices = 76 in Summer; 69 in Winter Open the blinds and take advantage of natural daylighting and solar heat gains Raise energy awareness in your facility and at home Call your facility manager or CE customer service for any HVAC, Lighting, or other energy issues in your building Eliminate personal appliances and consolidate to a shared area For more information go to http://www1.eere.energy.gov/femp/services/energy_aware.html.
