Under the hammer: Construction updated

Work is constantly being done to improve the quality of life on Shaw Air Force Base, S.C. Here are updates on some of Shaw's major construction projects:

Roofing: $1.6 million are being put into roofing repairs around the base. 168,000 square feet of roofs are being repaired for maintenance and to fix leaks. 60,500 square feet of roofs will be replaced with standing seam metal roofs. 23,500 square feet of roof will be replaced with thermoplastic polyolefin roofing.

Demolition: $2.4 million will be put into the demolition of the old Base Exchange and Burger King. The Burger King has already been torn down.

New gate: $3.7 million will help construct a gate on the north side of base to replace the Frierson Road gate house. This project will construct a new intersection of highway 441 at Oakland Drive and extend Shaw Drive around the commissary.

A new metal canopy over the existing main gate is slated to be installed along with two incoming checkpoint lanes for Security Forces for $700,400. This project will require the main gate to be closed for short periods of time during the construction for the canopy foundation, steel erection and overhead work.

Energy conservation: $755,500 is being spent to connect 54 facilities to have the base's energy control center through direct digital controls over a local area network to a help centrally monitored equipment status and energy usage.

Renovations:
$2.4 million is going into building 250 for a new standing seam metal roof and trim. A new heating, ventilation and air conditioning system and energy efficient windows are also scheduled to be put in.

$443,500 are going towards renovations to building 1832. They will repair the roof and interior sheetrock damage to include asbestos abatement, replacing suspended ceilings and lights, and insulating the interior of facilities. An HVAC will also be replaced with a new system (reuse chiller) and install a new fire suppression system.

$5.4 million will also complete the structure demolition and renovation of dorm 903 to the new dorms for Airmen standards. Upgrades and all new utilities will also be added to the dorm along with a modern HVAC system to provide improved reliability and humidity control.

Building 615 will have $2.3 million go towards a full interior facility renovation to base operations which includes a new HVAC system.

$150,000 will renovate the Top Gun lounge and brighten up the room.

$14.7 million to construct a 49,880 square foot addition to Air Forces Central building 1130. The building construction is in progress.

Renovations of building 1109 include new building electrical service with transformer, generator/ATS, rack mounted electrical distribution system and HVAC System will replace the existing 100kVA UPS with a new 150kVA UPS for $1.1 Million.

Electrical:
$1.5 million to upgrade a B1505 flight simulator to allow installation of new simulators. The work would include interior walls, ceilings, HVAC system replacement and fire system installation.
