A Safety Day was held for 20th Fighter Wing members as part of a kick off for the Critical Days of Summer at hanger 1200 here May 11.

"You are our number one resource," Col. Don Godier, 20th FW vice commander, told the Airmen. "All of our planes and munitions are worthless without you."

Godier warned Airmen of the many dangers that people come across during the warm summer months from drunk drivers and public areas to general safety.

He emphasized for Airmen who ride motorcycles take extra precautions when riding.

"A lot of riders have been hurt or killed even while wearing the proper safety gear and doing everything right," Godier said.

After the safety brief, 20th FW members were invited to check out several different booths that were set up around the hanger to ask questions and check out displays.

"When people come around and take a look at the different set ups, they get a better idea of what can go wrong," said Master Sgt. Vann Coker, 20th FW weapons safety. "Safety is better promoted through things like this."

One of the booths had a roll-over crash simulator with dummies inside to simulate what happens when seat belts aren't worn.

"This is a real eye-opener for a lot of people," said police Lance Cpl. Brent Kelley, S.C. Highway Patrol outreach coordinator. "They don't realize there are three parts to a crash: the vehicle, your body and internal organs."

Other booths were also set up around the building from the 20th Medical Group, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron firefighters, the Green Knights Chapter 58 (Shaw motorcycle riding group) and Airmen Against Drunk Driving.

"This was a good outreach for people to be able to go out and ask questions in a nonthreatening environment," said Cynthia Evans, 20th FW sexual assault response coordinator.
