2/17/2012- SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. - Shaw's McElveen Library opened a Professional Military Education room Feb. 17. The room will provide assistance to Airmen, Soldiers and civilians in education and learning.

The PME room will make it easier to access materials needed for training by providing online educational resources and books to study for college courses and languages.

McElveen Library employees organized what used to be the young adults' non-fiction and teen game room into a more useful and quiet area for Team Shaw to study and train.

"The PME room will be easy to access various training and educational resources," said Marc Engle, McElveen's service technician. "This will include [College Level Exam Program] books, numerous portals, and tutoring."

"Our goal, with this new room is to help sustain readiness and professional military education," said Sarah Sloan, McElveen's library director.

There are six computers enabled Common Access Card with readers for access to the Air Force and Army portals. Thirteen MP3 players are available, with College Level Examination Program and classrooms with teachers including math and English.

E-readers are also in the room for digital books. Downloads are available for those who have their own e-readers and would like to access more books.

Various educational sites include: Universal Class, Mango and Transparent Language, and Elton Bryson Stephens Company databases are also available in the PME room.

A digital book scanner is a new addition to convert out-of-print materials, training manuals, and other essential historical documents to a digital format that will be easily distributed to e-readers.

The PME room also enables active duty military to be ready for their careers after the military.

"The digital scanner will also be able to archive any important materials from the wing for posterity," Sloan said.

For books not currently available, McElveen employees have made a guide that makes accessing other libraries quick and easy.

The room also provides books from the Chief of Staff's Reading list.
