A press conference was held here at Hangar 1200 Jan. 26, to kick off the Shaw Air Expo 2012.

Local community leaders and media were invited to hear Col. Charlie Moore, 20th Fighter Wing commander, and Lt. Col. Scott Walker, Shaw Air Expo director, discuss the upcoming Air Expo scheduled for May 5-6.

"This is a great opportunity for us to bring members of the community onto the installation and show off, not only the base, but our most important asset, our people and then our hardware," Moore said. "It's also a way to give back to a community who really embraces us and our Airmen and now Soldiers. And, who goes out of their way to be really great friends and family members. It is very important to open our door for them, like they always open their door to us."

Shaw will be showcasing their air, ground, recruiting and Army assets, Walker added. Vendors will also be available selling merchandise to remember the day.

The two-day event is free and open to the public. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Currently scheduled to perform in the event are: the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the U.S. Army Golden Knights, the GEICO Skytypers, P-51 "Quick Silver," Bear Feat Aerobatics and the U.S. Air Force Heritage of America Band "Blue Aces."

Static display aircraft scheduled for viewing are: a C-17 Globemaster III, a T-38 Talon, an FW-149, a PT-17 Stearman, a C-45, a FW-190, a Vintage T-6, an L-2, a Vintage O-2A, C-46 Commando and an A-26 Invader, "The Spirit of North Carolina."
