The 50th Anniversary of the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) has kicked off with the initial celebration and training provided to Team Shaw representatives at the Carolina Skies Club Sept. 20.

The CFC was established in 1961 by John F. Kennedy as the only authorized solicitation of federal employees in the workplace. His vision was, "an annual fundraising drive based on the idea of 'one gift, once a year' to improve the quality of our local community, nation and world."

The Midlands Area CFC is comprised of federal civilian and military donors in 11 counties in South Carolina. All federal employees are eligible to participate and donate to a local, national, or international charity of their choice. The campaign offers donors access to charities that address a myriad of issues, like providing safety to abused children; conducting research to find cures for chronic diseases; and supporting American troops and veterans. Some, like the Shaw Friends of the Airmen and Family Readiness Center, address needs directly in the local community.

The campaign effort will run through Sept. 3 to Nov. 14 on base. It is important to note that no other fundraisers may occur on Shaw AFB while the Combined Federal Campaign is occurring.

Across the nation and abroad, people are working to offer assistance and the hope of a better life for those who are less fortunate. With your support, CFC organizations can make a difference helping those in need, struggling to find a cure, offering humanitarian relief, providing health education, protecting our natural resources at home and much, much more.

Please take the time to review the CFC brochure, which lists more than 1,400 local, national and international organizations. You will recognize several local organizations, or perhaps one of the many that have assisted numerous Team Shaw members.

The 2011 "50 Years of Caring" campaign seeks to build on the momentum of last year and to celebrate the CFC Golden Anniversary. During last year's campaign Team Shaw contributed well over its goal of $165,000. With your continued generosity and support this year we are striving to raise $175,000.

Giving is a personal choice and no one can tell you to whom or how much to pledge. However, whatever you decide will make a world of difference. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration and support.
