Shaw has received the greatest number of funded projects over the past few years since the base was first constructed in 1941.

There are currently about $251 million of construction projects underway. Of that amount, approximately S105 million were allocated for the new Army Central Command headquarters facilities.

According to Chris Aamold, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron deputy commander, the deliberate planning and scheduling started many years ago.

"In most instances, community layout and project programming for construction of this magnitude requires several years of effort," said Aamold. "Some projects, like the newest dormitory, happened to get funded through the economic stimulus program or other avenues simply because we were ready."

In addition to the projects underway, there are about $84 million in projects waiting to be awarded and about $25 million in projects that are currently in design.

Some of the major projects that Team Shaw members will notice are:

- The addition to the existing fitness center, which is scheduled to be completed this July, along with a new-144 person dormitory.

- The new east side fitness annex with locker rooms, fitness areas and a weight room is scheduled to open this September.

- The new east gate, which will provide personally owned vehicle entry and exit. This will also include a signaled intersection on highway 378. This project is scheduled to be complete around mid- to late October 2011.

- A new Base Exchange is scheduled to open this November and will have a Burger King and several other name brand restaurants in the food court.

- Power lines along the southern portion of Killian Avenue are being moved underground to increase the reliability of power on and improve the aesthetics of the installation.

- A major addition to the Air Forces Central Command building is now under construction and is scheduled to be completed in September 2012.

"We are constantly trying to improve the infrastructure and reliability of the base to give Team Shaw members a more comfortable place to work and play," said Charlie A. Bigelow, 20th Civil Engineer Squadron programs flight chief.
