Environmental cleanup public meeting June 13 Published May 18, 2011 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Leaders of Shaw Air Force Base, in conjunction with the city and county of Sumter, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control and the U.S. Air Force Air Combat Command invite the public to attend and participate in a Restoration Advisory Board meeting to be held at 6:30 p.m., June 13, at the New Beginnings banquet facility, 1335 S.C. highway 441 (Peach Orchard Road). The meeting presents a forum for open discussion of the environmental cleanup activities being conducted by the base. Anyone interested in the restoration activities at the base may attend. Shaw is conducting an ongoing series of environmental activities under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act, a federal law enacted in 1980 to require the investigation and clean up of legacy sites throughout the country. These initiatives are also accomplished within the guidelines of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976. The Air Force is committed to a clean and safe environment.
