Shaw celebrates Earth Day April 29 Published April 6, 2011 SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Severe weather on April 22, Earth Day, caused the scheduled events postponement to April 29, organizers said. Earth Day is an annual event observed around the world to raise awareness for environmental stewardship. As in years past, Shaw will mark this year's Earth Day jointly with Arbor Day. There will be educational booths at Memorial Park between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., April 29. The 20th Civil Engineering Squadron's unit social council will host a free BBQ lunch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Memorial Park shelter. At 1 p.m. unit commanders will take part in a tree-planting ceremony. According to Danny McKay, 20th CES, this year's theme is "A Billion Acts of Green." He cited simple acts such as carpooling to work as acts of green. Carpoolers can get a voucher for free tee-shirts at the base gates from 7 to 8:30 a.m. on April 29.
