The AbilityOne program is a federal initiative to help people who are blind or have other severe disabilities find employment by working for nonprofit agencies that sell products and/or services to the U.S. government. An AbilityOne appreciation picnic occurred here recently at the Memorial Lake pavilion in support of National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

The postal contract, shelf stocking and switchboard, Goodwill Industries award winners were Antoine Pearson, employee of the year for consolidated mail room; Sheri Pickell, commissary stocker of the year; Sean Prince, most improved; and Gloria Brooks, Goodwill employee of the year.

"Shaw does an amazing job of supporting AbilityOne and sets an excellent example," said Barry Lineback, AbilityOne director of business operations in the office of the executive director. "Commitment like Team Shaw's really makes a difference."

"When I think of Shaw AFB, I don't just look at the people in the military uniform," said Col. Charlie Moore, 20th Fighter Wing commander. "Every job here is important and makes up Team Shaw."

According to Judith Croxton, 20th Contracting Squadron director of business operations, there are more than 80 AbilityOne employees on Shaw, which is the largest employer in the state of South Carolina.
