There IS such a thing as a free lunch Published Sept. 21, 2010 By Rob Sexton 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Any Airman or Soldier in uniform between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on September 30 can drop by Hangar 1200 for a free lunch, provided by Sumter businesses. Organized by the Sumter Chamber of Commerce's military affairs committee, men and women from throughout the community are donating time, food, drinks, entertainment, door prizes, sweat and the gear to feed up to 2,000 members of Team Shaw. This is the second annual event, presented as a gift arranged by the chamber. "It's to show our appreciation to the men and women of Team Shaw," said Grier Blackwelder, executive director of the Sumter chamber, "for their commitment to our defense. And for the job they do to keep this country free." Then he added, (and ) "for being great neighbors." The menu features hamburgers, hot dogs, beans, potato salad, chips, coleslaw and beverages. "This is one of the most-rewarding events we conduct and we certainly look forward to it," Blackwelder went on. "We don't have a hard time finding volunteers because local folks love coming out to do this for our military." Food is for those who can make it to the picnic site at the hangar, Blackwelder noted, and no take-outs will be available. It is aimed specially at the people who are on duty on the 30th, Blackwelder explained, "so we can serve as many (on duty) as possible with our resources available."
