Airmen from the 20th Security Forces Squadron prevented a group of more than two dozen unauthorized people from entering base Wednesday.

The event began at approximately 6:30 a.m. when a civilian sub-contractor attempted to bring a group of workers on base, headed for one of Shaw's many construction projects.

At the main gate, Airmen from the 20th SFS noted some of the people presented improper identification, and therefore refused them entry.

"This was great police work," said Maj. Mark Walsh, 20th SFS commander. "Our Airmen did what they are supposed to do. There was no breach of Shaw's security. Throughout the situation, our security forces acted correctly and decisively."

During the security verification process, security forces discovered a lack of documentation resulting in a decision to call civilian law enforcement. The Sumter Police Department was contacted, who then notified U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement. Agents from ICE detained 25 of the individuals.

The sub-contractor was identified as Palacio Drywall of Cornelius, N.C.
