Nearly 300 Airmen here deployed on an air expeditionary force deployment to Iraq May 15.

Airmen from the 55th Fighter Squadron and 55th Aircraft Maintenance Unit "Shooters," as well as 20th Component Maintenance and Equipment Maintenance Airmen set out to support Operation Iraqi Freedom.

"I can say without a doubt that the 55th FS is ready for combat, no matter what happens," said Lt. Col. Doug DeMaio, 55th FS commander. "I am as proud as can be, and at the same time humbled that I will be leading the 55th FS."

Agencies throughout base came out in full force to support Airmen and their families and show what services they had to offer while their family members are deployed.

"We want to provide information for spouses and those they are leaving behind," said Dorcus Haney Airman and Family Readiness Center consultant. "We want the families to get involved, and let them know they are not alone. We are here for them, and ready to provide them with whatever they need."

Though the Airmen deploy, the families also fight on the home front, and it does not go unnoticed.

"We are all deeply appreciative of our families and Shaw's support of what lay ahead," said Colonel DeMaio. "We may be physically separated, but we are all going together."

The main goal is to keep the family's morale high and keep the communication open, said Michelle Cruz, 20th Equipment Maintenance Squadron Key Spouse.

For many Airmen, this was not their first deployment.

"We are doing the job that we are trained to do," said Tech. Sgt. Phillip Devault, 20th EMS. "In the end this is what we prepare for, the wartime mission."

Before Shaw Airmen took off for their deployment, the commander left them with a piece of advice.

"Your time in Iraq will be at a historic moment," Colonel DeMaio said. "Watch and you will see the mission change before your very eyes. It may seem quiet at times but be vigilant and ready at a moment's notice to execute any task because the enemy is waiting."

Shaw's 77th FS "Gamblers" are currently deployed to Balad Air Base, Iraq, and they are scheduled to return later this month.
