Shaw, Sumter conduct emergency-response training Published Jan. 11, 2010 By 2d Lt. Emily Chilson 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- Emergency first-responders from here and the city of Sumter will train together Thursday at Sumter County's training facility. The purpose of the training is to prepare for a major accident response exercise scheduled for Jan. 21 at Dillon Park in Sumter. The MARE will simulate an F-16 crash in the local area so first-responders and emergency operations center representatives from both Shaw and Sumter can react and practice procedures together. Training together will allow non-military responders to familiarize themselves with the F-16 fighter jet, including aircrew flight equipment and risks associated with the jet, said Erik Singletary, 20th Fighter Wing exercise and inspections director. "The goal of the training is to educate the local first-responders to the specific hazards involved with F-16 accidents," he explained. First-responders include fire fighters, law enforcement, and medical representatives from Sumter County, Shaw and other local agencies. "Furthermore, training like this strengthens our already fantastic working relationship with the local community," Singletary added. "The follow-on exercise on Jan. 21 will give them a chance to exercise what we have taught and give our emergency response agencies the opportunity to work in a dynamic environment."
