Fitness center construction ongoing Published Dec. 9, 2009 By Senior Airman David Minor 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- The fitness center is undergoing expansion at Shaw, and is expected to be completed May 2011. "The new fitness center is being constructed to better meet the needs of the active duty, family members and retirees to meet the ever-changing way of life," said Charles Glover, fitness and sports director. "It will also assist the active duty personnel keep "Fit to Fight" for the new fitness physical training program, and when they are deployed." Some of the new things coming to the fitness center include a 148-space parking lot, a 4,800 square foot cardio room with new equipment, a 6,800 square foot free weight and strength equipment room with new equipment, and a 2,500 square foot stretching and sit-up room. "The new facility will be a modern, state-of-the-art facility with the best equipment on the market to date," Glover said. "This gives the customers a more positive feel to want to work out to be "Fit for Life." The current facility will not miss a beat with all the construction. All areas will be available for use, and the hours of operation will not change. The major obstacle at the beginning of the project is parking. For now, parking has moved to the post office and building 800 parking lots. A fenced corridor has been established for access to the back door of the fitness center. A new parking area is being constructed behind the post office and off Shaw Drive. It will be completed around the end of March or April 2010. Upon completion of this parking area, patrons will use the entrance off Shaw Drive to enter the facility. For more information about the fitness center construction, call 803-895-2789.
