Annual combined charity drive kicks off Published Oct. 9, 2009 By Staff Sgt. John Gordinier 20th Fighter Wing Public Affairs SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. -- It's that time of the year again for service members and federal civilian employees to contribute to charities through the 2009 Combined Federal Campaign. "This year, Shaw's goal is to reach $165,000," said Maj. Linda Coates, 20th Fighter Wing CFC manager. "Last year, Shaw collected $162,380. The plan to surpass last year is to simply have all squadron and group point-of-contacts make 100-percent contact with their respective members, military or civilian." According to the CFC Web site, CFC's mission is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all. CFC is the world's largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, with more than 300 CFC campaigns throughout the country and internationally to help raise millions of dollars each year. Pledges made during the campaign season, which is Sept. 1 to Dec. 15, supports eligible non-profit organizations that provide health and human service benefits throughout the world. "The CFC is the only authorized charitable fundraising campaign for federal employees," the major added. "All charities must apply to the CFC and be selected." According to the CFC Web site, charities that apply to receive funds through the CFC are required to submit to extensive review of their financial and governance practices prior to acceptance. This eligibility review has helped set standards for participation in giving initiatives that transcend the community. "I think this year and with this economy, it is a great time to give to one of the thousands of charities in the CFC," Major Coates said. Those who volunteer to contribute can make a single payment contribution, or sign up to have a certain amount taken out of their pay checks every month for the year, she explained. For more information or to make a contribution, call Major Coates or Master Sgt. Randy Lightsey at 895-6962 or 895-6975. (Some information provided by CFC Web site)
