The U. S. Army's 4th Battlefield Coordination Detachment stationed here arrived on base Monday morning to be greeted by friends and family after a 12-month deployment.

With rain pouring from the sky, the Soldiers' families readily awaited for the door to open on the passenger jet carrying their loved ones.

No matter what type of weather, all were gathered to see the soldiers come back home.

The door opened, and the crowd erupted with cheers. Among the group arriving back was Maj. Steven Thomas. He was greeted by his wife Vicki, and then they left together to meet their daughter.

"We're going to surprise our daughter at volleyball practice after school," Major Thomas said.

The 4th BCD deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan for 12 months serving as the liaison between Multi- National Corps Iraq, International Security Assistance Force and the U.S. Central Command Combined Forces Air Component commander to support air and ground operations.

Many Team Shaw people helped prepare for the arrival of the 4th BCD. Spouses and volunteers made posters and baskets to greet Soldiers coming home. The 20th Fighter Wing's logistics readiness squadron, protocol office, public affairs and chaplains also provided support for the 4th BCD's return to base.

The unit will get a couple of days with family before returning to work for reintegration training to assist their transition back from deployment. Afterward, they will have the opportunity to take leave.

"It's a great day for the Army, Shaw Air Force Base, and the 4th BCD. Every Soldier came home safely, a tough and demanding mission was accomplished with distinction, and the 4th BCD family has been reunited once again," said Sergeant 1st Class Ronald Herd, 4th BCD rear detachment NCO-in-charge. "Our Soldiers and families are the best because the nature of our careers demand it from each and every one of them.  We are just so proud of them!"
